Each year, about 650,000 Americans suffer their first heart attack. Many of these people have been careful about diet and exercise and have never had any cardiac symptoms. About half of them have had a recent medical checkup that indicated that their cholesterol levels were normal. Clearly, to know your risk of heart attack, you must look at more than your basic cholesterol numbers.

Beyond Cholesterol

Elevated cholesterol is a significant risk that should not be ignored. If a patient comes to me with elevated cholesterol, I recommend he or she take steps to lower it, often by starting with the natural options described in this book. Still, the standard cholesterol tests are incomplete when it comes to determining risk. In order to dig deeper and identify risks hidden by the routine cholesterol profile, additional tests that go beyond cholesterol are needed. (These specific tests are described in detail in chapter 4.)

If cholesterol isn't the all-encompassing risk factor many doctors make it out to be, why don't other physicians look beyond cholesterol to other risk factors? In my opinion, there are two main reasons:

Many doctors don't emphasize prevention. Instead, the focus tends to be on treatment of existing medical problems. I believe it makes a lot more sense to prevent heart problems than to treat them after the fact.

Fewer data are available for the newer risk markers of heart disease than for standard cholesterol tests. Yet it's clearly recognized that more than one out of three patients with a heart problem has a normal cholesterol level. Obviously, factors beyond cholesterol play a significant role in bringing on heart disease.

Discovering Alternatives

In the past decade or so, patients have Tiffany necklace led their doctors toward a deeper appreciation of alternative therapies, those approaches to healing not traditionally taught in medical schools. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a branch of the National Institutes of Health that was founded in 1998, more than one out of every three Americans uses some form of complementary medicine.

Of course, alternative therapies aren't new; many of the "newly discovered" approaches to healing have in fact been used for thousands of years by other cultures. The new wrinkle involves integrative medicine, an approach to patient care that involves a combination of conventional medicine and natural approaches, including simple yet powerful dietary changes, exercise, vitamins, supplements, and mind-body relaxation techniques. In my opinion, integrative medicine makes the most sense and will be the medicine of the future. Why shouldn't both doctors and patients embrace the best of both conventional and alternative therapies?

My belief in integrative medicine has been affirmed by my experiences with the heart disease prevention program at the University of Illinois. When we launched this program, my colleagues and I first focused on reducing cholesterol with medication. Over time, the same patients returned with ongoing symptoms of heart disease despite our best efforts. It became clear that our approach to treatment - however valuable in some circumstances - was woefully incomplete. Although the powerful medications we relied upon did a great job at lowering LDL (the "bad" cholesterol), discount Tiffany jewelry we were not addressing a host of other (often inherited) risk factors. There was more to the story.

I was able to explore these other risk factors when I opened the Healthy Heart Center, a suburban satellite of the University of Illinois in Deerfield, Illinois, dedicated exclusively to heart disease prevention, one of the first such sites in the nation. For over twenty-three centuries acupuncture needles and gin-seng have mended what is now one-quarter of the world's population, yet it is only in the last two decades chat most Americans have even heard of them. In 1971, the year before the "Bamboo Curtain" lifted, New York Times journalist James Reston became ill while on assignment in China. After having his appendix removed, he was treated with acupuncture for post-surgical pain. The front-page stories he sent home reported, "I've seen the past, and it works!" At that moment Chinese medicine entered mainstream American consciousness.

Efrem and I began to practice acupuncture shortly after that in 1973. Since then we've treated thousands of Americans. One was Sam, a thirty-six-year-old biochemist, who had an excruciating pain in his abdomen diagnosed by his doctor as gallstones. Although he felt skeptical about Chinese medicine, he was more frightened by the prospect of surgery. After two months of acupuncture, herbs, and dietary modification, Sam expelled scores of stones, and a sonogram confirmed that surgery was no longer necessary. Fifteen years later she'd had no recurrence. Yet another person was Suzanne, who at age twenty-eight, after three miscarriages and two gynecological surgeries, was unable to conceive. So we set out to explain our sense of what Chinese medicine is - how it thinks, how it works, what it can do.

Numerous schools of thought and various methods are found within the vast historical tradition of Chinese medicine. It has never been a monolithic institution. After all, millions of doctors over the millennia have practiced its techniques and developed its theories. It sustained itself in part by adjusting to changing conditions and will continue to develop differently in each country and era in relation to the social demands and belief systems that prevail there. A MAN whose lungs are filled with cancer is sent home to die, having been told that medicine can do nothing for him. Six months later he reappears in his doctor's office, tumor free. A young woman - diabetic, a heavy smoker - lies unconscious in a coronary care unit following a bad heart attack. Her doctor anguishes over the fact that her cardiac function is rapidly declining and he is powerless to save her. But the next morning she is awake and talking, clearly on the way to recovery. A neurosurgeon tells grieving parents that their son, who is in a coma following a motorcycle accident and severe head injury, will never regain consciousness. The son is now fine.

Most doctors I know have one or two stories of this sort, stories of spontaneous healing. You will uncover many more of them if you seek them out, yet few medical researchers do. To most doctors, the stories are just stories, not taken seriously, not studied, not looked to as sources of information about the body's potential to repair itself.

Meanwhile, modern medicine has become so expensive that it is straining the economies of many developed nations and putting itself beyond the reach of much of the world's population. In many countries politicians argue about how to pay for health care, unaware that a philosophical debate about the very nature of health care has been ongoing throughout history. Doctors believe that health requires outside intervention of one sort or another, while proponents of natural hygiene maintain that health results from living in harmony with natural law. In ancient Greece, doctors worked under the patronage of Asklepios, the god of medicine, but healers served Asklepios's daughter, the radiant Hygeia, goddess of health. Medical writer and philosopher Rene Dubos has written:

For the worshipers of Hygeia, health is the natural order of things, a Tiffany jewelry positive attribute to which men are entitled if they govern their lives wisely. According to them, the most important function of medicine is to discover and teach the natural laws which will ensure a man a healthy mind in a healthy body. More skeptical, or wiser in the ways of the world, the followers of Asklepios believe that the chief role of the physician is to treat disease, to restore health by correcting any imperfections caused by accidents of birth or life.

Political debates about how to cover the costs of medical care mostly take place among followers of Asklepios. There has been no argument about the nature of medicine or people's expectations of it, only about who is going to pay for its services, which have become inordinately expensive because of doctors' reliance on technology. I am a dedicated follower of Hygeia and want to interject that viewpoint into any discussions of the future of medicine.

Let me give an example of how these different philosophies lead to very different courses of action. In the West, a major focus of scientific medicine has been the identification of external agents of disease and the development of weapons against them. An outstanding success in the middle of this century was the discovery of antibiotics and, with that, great victories against infectious diseases caused by bacteria. This success was a major factor in winning hearts and minds over to the Asklepian side, convincing most people that medical intervention with the products of technology was worth it, no matter the cost. In the East, especially in China, medicine has had a quite different focus. The two actors who play the Winchester brothers play very well off of one another and have great chemistry. Jensen Ackles, who plays the older brother is really the break out star of this show as his performances are outstanding. On the surface he appears to be little more than the smart ass big brother who simply wants to hunt down and destroy any supernatural creature he possibly can. It doesn't take long for us to see that Sam (the youngest) is not the only compassionate brother. They both want to find their father and avenge their mother's death as well as help others along the way. Add the character of the father to the mix and things get even more interesting. This show is not just about two demon-hunting brothers. It also skillfully explores the complicated relationship not only between the brothers, but between the brothers and their father as well. Supernatural only gets better and better as the season progresses and has become much more than just a monster of the week show. Every episode has wonderful, witty dialogue and unlike some other 'generic' horror/sci-fi shows targeted at younger audiences, Supernatural purposely tries to be different and to stand out from the crowd (and succeeds). By the end of this first season, I was completely enthralled by the storylines and looked forward to the show every week. The action only gets better and better until the season finale that leaves you wondering, what are the Winchesters going to do next and how will they possibly top this in season 2?

Scrubs is a medical comedy series which takes place at Sacred Heart Hospital and focuses on the life of Dr. John J.D. Dorian. J.D. has an imaginative mind, thus you often see things through his perspective and what he is saying to himself internally. He works with his off-and-on again girlfriend Dr. Elliot Reed who has a similar sense of humor as him, his best friend Dr. Christopher Turk (Donald Faison, "The Boondocks", "Robot Chicken") and Turk's wife Nurse Carla Espinosa. And at the workplace, J.D. must put up with Dr. Perry Cox who seems to not like him and the unusual janitor.

The team of NCIS agents introduced in Season 1 is led by former Marine Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a tough no-nonsense leader and interrogator. There is a great deal to like about NCIS, and sadly, CBS has never really promoted this show, spending far too much time on their CSI franchise. NCIS handles odd murder cases, a la CSI, but the humor that rests in the characters interactions (you've gotta love a hero whose name is Jethro, and a co-worker with the nickname Ducky) and the actors performances bring a humanity and warmth to a crime show that is sadly lacking in the glitzy world of CSI. You really start to think of these people as someone you'd like to meet and talk with (particularly listening to one of Ducky's stories all the way through, since he usually gets cut off by Gibbs) and that you'd have something in common with them. It gives the show a touch of realism that you so rarely find in TV these days

More and more studies are coming out about detoxification and the wonders it does for your body. I chose Dr. Bennett and Barrie’s 90 Day P90X Extreme Home Fitness program because it is the only one that I know of that has been clinically tested and researched.

So how did/do I feel? Great! I feel more focused, rejuvenated, and light! The first 5 days of the P90X DVD program, I didn’t lose much weight. I guess I had a lot of toxins built up in my body and it wasn’t flushing out as well. The 6th day was when I experienced some great flushes :-) I didn’t visit the bathroom frequently. More so, I did a bigger job when I did visit, if you know what I mean :-P

Once I committed to the P90X DVD boxset I was excited about the actual detoxification of my body than losing weight. But at the end of 90 days I lost a total of 7 lbs. Majority from the last 2 days for me.

The P90X Extreme program wasn’t that difficult for me. I found ways to make the meals enjoyable and it’s always helpful to have someone go through it with you for support. I realized that the most difficult part of the 90 Day P90X Extreme Home Fitness Miracle program would be the liquid fast you have to go through for the first 2 days.

Here’s a sample overview of the 90 days I went through for the 90 Day P90X DVD program.

? Diet of liquids, organic fruits and vegetables, and rice
? Organic vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs
? Home hydrotherapy/exercise therapy and a one week toxin-free lifestyle

One question that I was asked about, besides the obvious question of “Is it hard?”, was in regards to the exercise therapy. What type of exercises are appropriate for the 90 Day P90X DVD set program? First, Dr. Bennett and Barrie, authors and creators of the 90 Day P90X DVD boxset Miracle program, explains that exercise, for the circulation therapy module of the P90X Extreme program, “promotes the reduction of fat reserves, a primary storage site for toxins. Mobilizing these fat reserves is a very important part of detoxification therapy. Second, the types of exercise they recommend are aerobic and yoga. This was awesome because it gave me a chance to utilize my P90X Extreme Home Fitness Cardio X, Kenpo X/Kenpo Cardio Plus, and Yoga X. I decided not to workout with P90X DVD Plyometrics because it’s a high impact workout and with a low calorie diet for the 90 Days, I didn’t want to risk feeling fatigued.

I do want to note once again that the P90X DVD set program that I did is not popular “lemon pepper diet” that a lot of people have heard about. I can see how that specific P90X DVD boxset program is popular. It’s very low in cost but it’s not a proper P90X Extreme program no matter what the arguement may be. There’s been much research and studies completed on what a proper P90X Extreme Home Fitness program is and clinical studies have found that the proper P90X DVD program consists of a liquid fast, organic vitamins/minerals/supplements, organic amino acids, organic fruits and vegetables and hydrotherapy/exercise.

It was so beyond what TV has had to offer and I'm a very STRONG supporter of howLost ended. I've watched every single episode and have no comprehension why so many are disappointed? There are just unexplained mysteries in the universe, deal with it!! haha. There are many answers if you research things more so I suggest that to those that don't understand or whatever? Season six Rules!!!

I started the program on February 3rd and at that time my weight was 185 and my body fat percentage of 25.7%. About six weeks prior to starting P90X DVD I had cleaned up my diet and made a consistent effort to eliminate refined sugars, high fat food, and other junk. In addition to the diet, I was back on the P90X DVD set regime of my own design that helped me drop 20 pounds when I was first married. It was resistance work one day, cardio the next with one day off. In those six weeks, I dropped 10 pounds. The last couple of weeks before I switched to P90X DVD boxset, I would put the DVD’s in and watch them as I rode my stationary bike for an hour. I thought I was ready for P90X Extreme…boy was I wrong.

The first week I was in pain. Not the type of pain that would prevent me from P90X Extreme Home Fitness the next day, it was more like a dull muscle ache. I felt it was a good sign, my muscles were being challanged to grow and strengthen. I didn’t have any trouble going to sleep the first week, as a matter of fact I went to bed an hour and a half earlier than I had the weeks before P90X DVD. One of the reasons I went to bed early was that the only time I had to workout without distractions or interruptions was at 5:30 in the morning. In the past I had done my P90X DVD set at night, but I would often feel to tired to P90X DVD boxset or make excuses to myself for not lifting weights that evening. Those excuses over the years have really put on the pounds.

“All it takes is an hour a day to get in the best shape of your life”. That’s what the Beachbody site claims. Not really true. The P90X Extreme, the longest of the workouts, will consume one hour and 32 minutes of your day. Most of the other workouts are about and hour, but on some days you’ll do one workout and follow it up with Ab Ripper X. That P90X Extreme Home Fitness consists of 15 minutes of gut busting ab and core exercises without a single break in the routine. Although the P90X DVD program is marketed as a program that only requires an hour a day, the facts are it’s going to be a little more. If your looking for an exercise that’s quick and easy, P90X DVD set is not for your. Beachbody offers a couple other programs that are much shorter and are geared for the beginner.

In addition to the time for the P90X DVD boxset, I’ve found that I have been spending more time planning out my meals everyday - which is a good thing. I spend about twice as much time as I used to gathering up healthy snacks and lunches I take to work. Lately I have been closely tracking my nutrional intake using the desktop version of Fitday.com. I seemed to have hit a weight loss plateau at the end of day 30 and now I’m trying to discover the cause of the P90X Extremeproblem. There are a couple of good free online programs that will help you track your daily nutrition, fitday.com and livestrong.com are two of the most popular with P90X Extreme Home Fitness. Journaling my food intake is something I’ve resisted since I have started the program, I know there are studies that claim that dieters who track there food intake are more successful than those who don’t, but it’s so boring and a little too obsessive for me. But I’ve done P90X DVD set for about a week now and it’s becoming more a part of my daily habit. I typically just jot notes down in my day timer, than in the evening spend about 20-30 minutes entering all the data and analyze how I’m doing. My caloric intake is less than what is recommended by the P90X DVD Nutrition Guide, and I’m burning more calories than what I’m taking in - at least that’s what Fitday is telling me. I have noticed that I am consuming more carbs than protein right now. In this phase, the amounts should be equal. That’s where these eating journals/analyzers really prove their worth. I know I need to make an adjust for example trade out the apple for one of my snacks and replace it with a source of protein such as a cheese stick or a protein bar.

My P90X DVD boxset equipment consists or two pairs of dumbbells, a set of cast iron plates for the bars, the Iron Gym doorway pull-up bar, heart rate monitor, and a yoga mat. My diagnostic equipment consists of a fat caliper, Fitday calorie tracking program, and a Thinner brand digital scale.

I have used the bands in a pinch and liked they way they worked out my shoulders in place of the pull-up bar, but I wouldn’t trade my dumbbells for the bands on any of the P90X DVD exercises. If you can work into your budget, go for the dumbbells.

I’ve blogged about my impressions about each workout during my first 30 days so I’ll just summarize my thoughts. Since P90X Extreme is a one size fits all workout, it’s going to be too much for some people and not enough for other people. The P90X Extreme Home Fitness’s don’t take into account any previous injury you have or medical condition that may prevent you from performing some exercises. The Plyometrics workout for me feels like it is actually doing more harm than good since I have knee joint problems and this high impact exercise is nothing but explosive jumping and twisting. Not good for me, so I have to modify the exercises when I feel it putting too much strain on my knees.

After 30 days of P90X DVD, I have noticed a difference in my overall fitness level. I can see why they have a fitness test that you can download for free and attempt at home before you make the commitment and buy P90X DVD set. I took the test and probably should have started with P90 first, but I ignored the results of the test and bought P90X DVD boxset anyway.

I now have a renewed interest in fitness, exercising, and nutrition which is certainly a benefit whether or not I choose to continue using P90X Extreme beyond the 90 days. I’ve discovered some great fitness podcasts and websites so I’m building on my knowledge of weighlifting, supplements, and nutrition each day. I’m not sure what my final results will be in the way of weight loss, but eventually I will be healthier due to P90X Extreme Home Fitness.

I have lost a couple of inches around the waist and shirt collars that were once snug are now really loose. It’s great to see results from my hard work. When I took my 30 day photos I was expecting to see a huge difference, since I only lost five pounds in the first 30 days, I had to analyze the photos to spot the areas of improvement. I can see the loss around the waist and a little more definition in my upper back. I don’t show a lot of my upper legs in the photos, but I have lost inches there too.
